As children learn to read and write, they need to know and understand the relationship between letters (symbols) and speech sounds. This sound-symbol relationship is what we call “phonics.” “Children used to learn to read and then they stopped teaching phonics” per ELW so she wrote Phonetic Rock to correct this wrong!
